In the vibrant neighborhood of Jamaica Plain, this project began with a meaningful vision: to create more space for a growing family—space to live, to play, and to create. The clients dreamed of a bright, open third floor where their children could have room to grow, practice instruments, and simply be at home. They also wished to preserve the existing exterior design, keeping the character of their house intact.
Our approach respected both the family’s needs and the home’s architectural language. From the outside, very little changed. But inside, we designed and built a full third-floor addition along with a partial remodel of the second floor. The interior aesthetic is modern and minimal, with clean lines, soft tones, and natural materials that elevate the space without overwhelming it.
Access to the new floor was creatively carved through a second-floor closet, transformed into a discreet and elegant stairway. This hidden detail now serves as the spine of the new level, connecting the old and new with quiet sophistication. Upstairs, we crafted a layout that includes two airy bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a comfortable living space—each filled with natural light from carefully positioned windows and a vaulted ceiling that gives the rooms height and calm.
One of the project's most delicate aspects was that the family remained in the home during the entire renovation. Our team coordinated each phase with precision, minimizing disruption and maintaining a clean, respectful work environment. Every decision—from timing to layout—was made to honor the daily rhythms of the family while building something extraordinary.
Today, the home stands transformed. The new third floor has not only changed the way the family uses the space—it has changed how they feel in it. What was once a limitation became a quiet sanctuary. The kids have a space of their own, sunlight floods every corner, and the house feels more like home than ever. For the family, it’s a dream fulfilled. For us at Pessote, it’s the kind of project that defines our purpose.
